
NAIDOC Week 2020

Royal Life Saving WA is a proud participant in NAIDOC Week, celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's theme of Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for our continent for over 65,000 years.
2020 has been an important year for Royal Life Saving WA's work towards reconciliation, with the release of our REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan. Let's all celebrate the rich history of Australia by seeing, hearing and learning from our First Nations peoples.
Below are some of the NAIDOC Week activities and events that are being held or participated in by Royal Life Saving WA and our program partners:
Pilbara Aquatic Festival
Supported by Principal Community Partner BHP, Town of Port Hedland and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. The Pilbara Aquatic Festival will be held on 11-12th November and will see over 180 children from 12 communities throughout the Pilbara visit Port Hedland to participate in swimming and lifesaving activities.

BHP Perth Cinema – Community Screenings
BHP are hosting FREE screenings of some great films during NAIDOC Week. Visit the BHP building each day from Tuesday to Friday at 11:30am for special screenings of First Australians, Putaparri & the Rainmakers, Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy and The Final Quarter.

Churchlands Senior High School
Churchlands SHS will be celebrating NAIDOC Week in several ways, including exhibition AFL matches at lunchtime, an extra special canteen menu inspired by Indigenous ingredients, a library display and daily quizzes, to name just a few!

City of Fremantle
Join the City of Fremantle during NAIDOC Week to celebrate and learn about Nyoongar culture! Enjoy children’s Nyoongar storytelling, Nyoongar Olympics and check out the book display and NAIDOC Week collection in the library.

City of Perth
There are several activities and events happening in and around Perth during NAIDOC Week, including the Opening Ceremony at the Supreme Court Gardens, Council House Lights display, Elders Portraits exhibition and the opening of Kaal Yimniny – the City’s first ever Whadjuk-named public space on the corner of Hay and Irwin Streets.

City of South Perth
Commencing with a Flag Raising Ceremony on November 9, the City of South Perth’s NAIDOC Week Programme of events includes intergenerational storytime and craft, astronomy with King Toogarr Bibbullmun Elder and even a digital ‘Words with Wine’ event.

City of Swan
The City of Swan are running a series of events throughout the City, including cultural awareness sessions, family friendly activities, community movie nights and live music events. There’s something for everyone!

City of Vincent
From art exhibitions to footy matches, the City of Vincent is delivering an exciting series of events for NAIDOC Week 2020 to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Nations people.

City of Wanneroo – Flag Raising Ceremony
The City of Wanneroo will be holding a Flag Raising Ceremony and morning tea as a symbol of the respect and appreciation that the City has for its local Aboriginal heritage, culture and community.

Football West - 2021 Ball Design Competition
Football West is inviting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to create a design which will be printed onto footballs and distributed to clubs across the state. The winning artist will receive a $1,000 sports equipment voucher and 10 footballs with the winning design! The competition runs until 12th February 2021.
Hale School
Hale School – along with many other schools – celebrated NAIDOC Week in August to allow the whole school to celebrate (including year 12s). A new mural was designed and completed that reflects the school’s Indigenous links and commitment. Check out this great video of what the students got up to during NAIDOC celebrations!

Soccer in the City
A joint collaboration between Football West, WA Police, Mission Australia and the City of Perth will see Yagan Square turned into a football field on Thursday 12 November for Soccer in the City! There will be small-sided matches plus music and food, with the winning design from Football West's 2020 NAIDOC Ball Design competition (shown below) displayed on Yagan Tower and on the footballs used on the day.
