International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, and this year the theme is Choose to Challenge, raising awareness against gender bias and taking action for equality.A group of girls practising spineboard rescue at the edge of the pool

16-year-old Jinali Bin Saad, and 17-year-old Letisha Parker are incredible Aboriginal women from our state’s Pilbara region who graduated from the Royal Life Saving WA Pool Lifeguard course through our Talent Pool program. This program, supported by Principal Community Partner BHP, is our premier youth employment program that works to empower youth across WA, with a focus on the Pilbara region.

Two girls practising first aid skillsBoth young women completed their senior first aid and pool lifeguard course over two days, learning advanced senior first aid, management of spinal injuries, and how to respond to a range of complex and challenging rescue scenarios. Letisha is the first Aboriginal young woman from Roebourne to qualify as a senior pool lifeguard and was thrilled when she graduated from the course stating this was a goal two years in the making! She’s has worked with the City of Karratha to complete her shadow lifeguard shifts and be signed off as a fully-fledged Pool Lifeguard.

For Jinali this is another in an impressive portfolio of achievements, as she had previously claimed a senior taekwondo black belt. She intends to finish Yr 11 and 12 over the coming years, working as a lifeguard in her downtime to help support herself. Her long-term aim is to pursue employment in the Pilbara’s resources sector. We wish both girls all the best for a very bright future and look forward to seeing them make a big splash in the aquatics industry in the coming months and years.
