Carnarvon Swim School providing vital education for local families
Royal Life Saving WA’s network of Endorsed Swim Schools pays a vital role as we work to ensure people right across our state have an opportunity to learn swimming and water safety skills. In WA’s culture and climate these skills are essential, for both children and adults, enabling people to enjoy taking part in water activities that are such a popular part of our way of life.
Carnarvon Swim School is one of our regional Endorsed Swim Schools, which was established in 2015. It provides swimming and water safety education to the Carnarvon community, aiming to provide high quality swimming lessons for infants right through to adults, as they educate their swim school families on how to stay safe in, on and around the water.
Carnarvon Swim School Coordinator Jenny Little says being able to personally engage with students is very important. “All our class sizes are small to ensure all participants gain maximum practice time in the water, this helps them to achieve the desired outcomes.” She says all swim instructors at the centre hold recognised swim teaching, advanced first aid, resuscitation and aquatic rescue qualifications which are updated on a regular basis. “Swimming Instructors at the Centre are also trained Lifeguards and the Centre holds training and professional development opportunities for all staff throughout the year. All staff at the Centre also hold a current National Police Clearance and Working With Children Check.”
The Carnarvon Swim School is well placed to give the local community plenty of opportunities to learn these vital skills, offering a wide range of programs including infant aquatics, pre-school aquatics, Swim & Survive, private lessons for children with special needs, Junior Lifeguard Club, January Swim & Survive vacation lessons, adult learn to swim and Bronze Medallion. Out of the water families cal also access a variety of safety talks and education, including Royal Life Saving WA’s Make the Right Call, Keep Watch Safety Talks and Heartbeat Club Training Sessions.
Jenny says the Carnarvon Swim School is very well attended by local families. “We had nearly 300 participants enrol last season and current enrolments for this season are encouraging with 30% of our vacancies filled prior to our open day. I am looking forward to another wonderful season in the water sharing my love of all things aquatic with our Swim School Families.”
