Everyone should Have a Go just like Katanning

16 February 2024

Life is all about trying new things and giving everything a go, this is why Royal Life Saving WA run 'Have a Go’ days in partnership with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. Earlier this month, it was Katanning Aquatic Centre's turn to try their hand at some new sports and activities including pool lifesaving.

There was water polo, obstacle races, line throw, swimming relays, artistic swimming and much more on offer.

Attendees had a ball, with a large turnout waiting for the event to start. The local children weren't the only ones benefitting with a number of children from other areas coming along as well.

Camille Claudino from Artistic Swimming WA said, ''The event was a great experience for all the aquatic sports to share their sports with such a welcoming and energetic community.''

The kids were aged between seven to 16 years, which was great as everyone brought different skills and abilities as well as mentorship from the older kids to the younger ones.

The sense of community it created was great and are a big part of why these events are so successful and are extremely popular for centres to run. Having these days ensures kids get interested and stay engaged in sport whether its individual or team based. It means the kids can socialise, meet other people from different circles, stay physically and mentally fit and be a part of a community.

With Royal Life Saving WA Sports Coordinator Jonnine Rowe detailing the how important it is to continue running these days.

''It allows kids to try different activities and discover strengths and skills they didn't know they had, it's very rewarding to be a part of their journey and something I always look forward to," she said.
