Exmouth participants up-skill for the benefit of their community

Bronze Medallion course participantsCommunity members from Exmouth spent the recent WA Day long weekend acquiring new lifesaving skills as they completed Bronze Medallion Open Water and Provide First Aid courses.

Royal Life Saving WA First Aid and Aquatic Trainer Steve O’Meara facilitated the courses for the regional community over the three days of 4th-6th June. A total of eight participants took part, with three completing their Bronze Medallion Open Water and five refreshing their first aid skills.

Participants were very excited to participate in the two courses, with many of them needing these qualifications for work which involves ensuring people's safety while enjoying their holidays in Exmouth.

“They were very thankful for the opportunity to further their skills,” said Steve. “They said these courses don’t come around often in regional areas, so they were excited at the prospect to upskill.”

Trainer Steve O'Meara with Bronze Medallion course participantsRoyal Life Saving in collaboration with our Principal Community Partner BHP were able to organise two trips to Exmouth over the last two months where Steve delivered six days of lifesaving learning through courses such as the Bronze Medallion and Provide First Aid. The courses were delivered as part of Royal Life Saving’s aim to train lifesavers and first responders in every community.

Additionally, the training supported the upskilling of these regional participants, with the inclusive training options qualifying them for integral career pathways for their community.

“Many of the participants were doing the courses to open up new employment options in areas they hadn't been involved in before,” said Steve. “Having local people suitably qualified is important for the community. This ensures services are maintained which benefit the whole community.”

Exmouth participants met the day with much enthusiasm, keen to achieve these qualifications to prepare for new pathways as well as become qualified lifesavers and first responders for their community. With feedback from participants acknowledging the efforts of Royal Life Saving and BHP in organising and running the courses, we are happy to see that these training opportunities have had a positive impact.
