Gala Day at Pool Builders Choice aims to save lives

21 February 2017

Royal Life Saving Society WA is partnering with Pool Builders Choice this weekend to promote water safety through a Gala Day at their store, Shop 6 Lot 329 Alexander Drive Ballajura. The event will happen on Sunday 26th February from 10am to 2pm with children’s activities, a visit by the muscle cars, raffles, giveaways, face painting and a sausage sizzle. Royal Life Saving’s mascot Dippy Duck will also be there to entertain the children.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of childhood drowning prevention, while also raising funds for Royal Life Saving Society WA’s Keep Watch program. Keep Watch works hard to reduce the incidence of drowning among children under the age of 5 in WA.Staff member from Pool Builders Choice in front of a sign with Gala Day information

Alice Buzuk from Pool Builder’s Choice says the decision to support Royal Life Saving Society WA in this way was quite an easy one for them. “We are both organisations who are involved in the swimming industry and it just makes a lot of sense to work together to make people understand the safety precautions you need to take around water. My partner’s cousin drowned in a pool at the age of 7, and although it was an accident we know that it is something that could possibly have been prevented through either proper swimming lessons or CPR knowledge.”

One of the main messages of our Keep Watch program is that parents and carers must ensure they are always there to actively supervise children around water. This is something Ms Buzuk firmly believes in “My partner’s daughter is 13 years old and has been around water from a very young age as he is a pool builder. Even though she is a very good swimmer we do not allow her in our swimming pool without at least myself or Mark outside with her. I think people get lost with technology and busy lives.”

Apart from spreading the water safety message Sunday’s event will also give those who attend the chance to enter a raffle with more than $3000 worth of prizes up for grabs! Prizes include 2 Kreepy Krawley pool cleaners, Rottnest Fast Ferries tickets, lifejackets, a pool safety package, a Heart Beat Club CPR group training session and a whole lot more.

Pool Builders Choice is a member of the Swimming Pool and Spa Association WA (SPASA WA) and is proud to ensure only the best in safety standards for all pools they sell and install. Ms Buzuk says although WA has some of the strictest pool fencing safety laws in Australia more can still be done to prevent drowning. “Our pool fencing laws are fantastic, but maybe an introduced to water safety principals should also be added to those laws to ensure people who own pools understand how to safely use their pool, maybe then drowning rates would reduce.”
