Heart Beat Club meets babysitters club
Eight ‘tween’ girls recently participated in a Royal Life Saving WA
Heart Beat Club course to gain important First Aid and CPR skills to assist them in future babysitting jobs. The group, along with three of their younger brothers, completed the course during the recent school holidays in April.
The Heart Beat Club course is traditionally aimed at new parents, grandparents and carers who will be looking after young children. The course aims to increase skills and confidence in CPR and First Aid in infants and children. In addition to resuscitation, the course covers injuries common among children such as burns and scalds, choking and various water hazards that present a risk of drowning.
Mother Kimberly Hyndman saw a need for her daughter Chloe, 13, to increase her first aid skills as she enters the world of babysitting. She chose the Heart Beat Club course for Chloe and her friends as it best suits the type of situations they could encounter while babysitting.
Kimberly also sees an added benefit in that Chloe and her younger brother Ben, who also completed the course, are now prepared in case of an emergency at home as well.
Other mothers of the attendees also saw value in the experience. Amanda, whose daughter Eloise participated, said that Eloise “loved attending the course and was able to tell us all about what to do in different medical situations after the workshop.”
“She particularly enjoyed the hands-on practise of CPR on adult and baby models,” Amanda said. “I feel that she is more confident and capable as a potential future babysitter now having attended the course – thank you!”
