High demand win for women only Swim and Survive lessons
Due to high demand, Cannington Leisureplex and Leisurepark Balga have organised more Women's Only Swim and Survive lessons during Term 4, with Royal Life Saving busy organising participants and collecting enrolments for these popular swimming classes.
This program is focused on the intermediate swimmers who have already completed our Beginner's Swim and Survive program at the centres, enabling them to continue their learn to swim journey.
Research has found that within Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) groups, awareness of the importance of swimming and lifesaving skills is significantly less than the rest of the population.
Alarmingly, over the past ten years 137 people have drowned in Western Australia who were born overseas, accounting for 40% of drowning deaths. Overall, 43% of drowning deaths involved people who’d been living in Australia for 10 years or more while 15% had recently migrated to WA, with India, Ireland, Malaysia and the UK the most common places of birth. Action is required to assist people from multicultural communities to take part in vital swimming & water safety education.
The Royals believe that learning to swim through the Swim and Survive program is an important life skill for CaLD communities to possess, as well as engaging them with their local aquatic centre and being a part of a wider community.
Inclusion Coordinator, Emily Balcombe, says ‘We want to assist CaLD participants in their pathway from learning to swim through to engaging them with the other activities the swimming centres have to offer.’
Multicultural Women’s Only Swim and Survive Programs are culturally appropriate women’s only swimming programs which allow women from different backgrounds come together and take part in beginner and advanced swimming and water safety classes.
The Royals have partnered with Cannington Leisureplex and Leisurepark Balga to collect enrolments for an extended Women’s Only Swim and Survive program via our website.
