Jigalong Remote Pool open for the season
There’s been much excitement in our state’s north over the past couple of weeks, with our Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pool opening their gates for the new season. The pool at Jigalong opened on 28th of September, after much anticipation from the local community, with new Manager Ray Martin and partner Deb Gill the new Program Coordinator.
Although the water was only 21 degrees, that didn’t deter the 84 intrepid swimmers on what was a fine warm day, and they were treated to some high energy, warming activities conducted by Deb in her own effervescent way! These included, water polo, a bombing competition and other water games.
DJ Hooray was also on hand to provide some music on the day, which led to a fun group dance session that included the Macarena as a highlight for the local kids and adults alike!
The first 20 swimmers to arrive on the day were presented with a very special t-shirt, made available by Royal Life Saving WA, featuring the fantastic piece of artwork that was recently completed by the local school children at the entrance to the pool.
The day was made even more of a success by a band of wonderful helpers, who assisted with the free BBQ and activities. We’d like to sincerely thank Erin, Em, Noelene and her son, Sam for their amazing help!
Ray says it was a fantastic start to what is going to be a super season! “We were encouraged by the comment of one of the locals as they left, saying they had never seen such interaction from the kids and community at the pool. They also noticed some of the great renovations that have been done to the gardens and buildings at the pool over the off season.”
Royal Life Saving WA looks forward to seeing all the wonderful work that will be done by Ray and Deb over the coming months, as they teach local children, youth and adults vital swimming and water safety skills to help them safely enjoy water activities in our state’s north!
