Kwinana over 55s brush up on their Aqua Skills

Kwinana adults brush up on their aqua skillsAdults aged 55 and over recently had the chance to brush up on their aquatic skills, with a four-week Aqua Skills 55+ program taking place last month at Kwinana Recquatic.

This four-session course, running weekly, was designed as a refresher in water safety and lifesaving skills for older adults. Participants learned essential skills to handle emergencies, develop personal survival techniques, and strengthen their understanding of water safety to reduce the risk of drowning.

In emergencies, it’s often a friend, family member, or neighbour who’s first to respond. Having the confidence and skills to act in a crisis can be lifesaving, yet resuscitation and lifesaving techniques can fade without regular practice.

This is particularly important given that half of all drowning deaths in WA involve adults aged 45 and over. While many Australians feel comfortable around water, believing they know the basics of water safety, drowning can affect anyone—regardless of age, experience, or skill level. Water can take people by surprise when they least expect it, so being equipped with water safety knowledge and recognising potential risks can help save lives.

Additionally, adults in this age group are often welcoming grandchildren into their lives, bringing toddlers back into the home environment. This can mean that many haven’t had to consider water safety for young children for quite some time. With the added presence of young ones, it's more important than ever to refresh water safety knowledge and put preventative measures in place, helping to keep both adults and children safe around water.

The Aqua Skills 55+ program is suitable for all skill levels—whether you have a fear of the water, are a regular swimmer, or just like an occasional dip, this course is for you! Plus, it’s a fantastic way to meet new people, pick up new skills, and enjoy yourself!

Kwinana adults brush up on their aqua skills “[I] thoroughly enjoyed every session especially the water-based exercises. I learned so much each time. Recommend this excellent course to anyone who swims or has care of grandchildren around water. The instructor, Cathie, was passionate about water safety and survival and that is demonstrated in each session,” said Kwinana Aqua Skills 55+ participant Evelyn Wheeler.

The Aqua Skills 55+ program is available at several locations across Perth and is currently FREE for those over 55.
