Long live the Lap Swimming Challenge at Bidyadanga

3 November 2023

The Lap Challenge is back in full force with a fruity twist.

This month at Bidyadanga Swimming Pool, the community can participate in the challenge, with simple rules.

The more laps you swim, the more you can win!

Every lap swum gets tallied and you can win tickets which put you in the weekly raffle draw, where Bidyadanga is giving away basketballs.

Participants can also win a t-shirt designed by community member, FS, depending on how many laps they swim.

For participants under five, 100 laps swum gains them a t-shirt, 250 laps need to be tallied for children aged six to nine and 500 laps counted for participants aged ten and above and adults learning to swim.

For the early morning risers, guess how many laps they must swim?

1000 laps.

As further incentive, everyone who swims laps at the pool will get a piece of delicious fruit for coming along and getting involved at the pool.

So, what does the t-shirt look like?

artwork for Bidyadanga t-shirtFS, pulled inspiration from the community, pool, community and the fruit with the theme of ‘’The pool is fun for everyone.’’

The centre circle symbolises Bidyadanga (Karajarri country), with the four blue circles representing the language groups of Bidyadanga and 2 other blue circles highlighting the swimming pool.

The lifeguards are illustrated through the green circles with the wavy line and the other green circles are reminiscent of the Karajarri seasons.

The green and blue dots represent the males participating in the challenge with pink and purple dots for the ladies.

The ripples and design at the corners are for the swimming that participants will be doing, along with the fruit they will receive for swimming.

It was such a creative project for FS to be able to collaborate on, with Remote Pool Manager of Bidyadanga Swimming Pool, Bernie Egan, stating he did an “awesome job and that he was thrilled with the outcome.”
