November raffle winner takes home $10k

7 December 2022

Retired schoolteacher Jenny was enjoying a good book at home when she got the call from Royal Life Saving that she was the November raffle winner.

“I go through life thinking you’ve got to be in it to win it… but it’s still not very likely,” she said.

The grandmother of two visited the Royal Life Saving WA head office in Mt Claremont on Tuesday, to meet the team and celebrate her $10,000 win with a piece of cake.

Growing up on a farm in the wheatbelt, Jenny learnt to swim in a dam with her seven brothers and sisters.

“Dams go from being reasonably shallow to dropping off really deep, so my parents made sure to enrol us in VacSwim lessons when we were on holiday in Albany, Busselton and Hopetoun,” she said.

Jenny is part of Royal Life Saving’s Royalty VIP Club which allows supporters to assist us with ongoing monthly contributions while putting them in the draw to win large cash prizes.

And while Jenny encourages others to sign up for a membership if they can afford it, the November winner says it’s not all about the prizes.

“You don’t think about that because that’s a one-in-whatever chance, you just do it because it’s saving kids from drowning; that’s why I do it,” she said.

Jenny’s already got big plans for her prize money, confessing she’ll finally be able to refinish her old 1940’s dining table, a project she’s been hoping to do since she retired seven years ago.

“I’m going to get new dining room chairs too, because the table was from my dad’s farm and my sister took the chairs and I’ve got the table,” she said.
