Record participants in Womens Only program

19 February 2016

We have a record number of participants currently taking part in our Women’s Only Swim and Survive program at Cannington Leisureplex.multicultural women doing swimming lessons at Cannington leisureplex

The program aims to provide a culturally appropriate setting for women from different backgrounds to come together and take part in beginner and advanced swimming and water safety classes.

55 women from a range of cultural backgrounds, including Afghan, Chinese, Indian, African, Iranian and Vietnamese, are taking part,  with just over half of them learning to swim for the very first time!

People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities are over-represented in drowning statistics, with 50 drowning deaths in WA involving members of the CaLD community in the past 5 years. This accounts for 37% of all drowning deaths.

Women’s Only Swim and Survive is available at Cannington Leisureplex, Leisurepark Balga, and The Swim School Merriwa during each school term.

The program is supported by the Office of Multicultural Interests, and we would like to thank them for their continued support.
