Swim and Survive Fund supports kids with cystic fibrosis
Children with cystic fibrosis are enjoying the many benefits of swimming thanks to a partnership between Royal Life Saving WA and Cystic Fibrosis WA. Through a number of our endorsed swim schools, our Swim and Survive Fund provides swimming lessons for kids with special needs, making it more affordable for those families and breaking down the barriers to participation.
A number of our key endorsed swim schools have provided a discount to enable Royal Life Saving WA to fund more children with cystic fibrosis, making a huge difference to their health and well-being. Participating swim schools include Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, Mandurah Aquatic, Kwinana Requatic and Next Generation Bibra Lake.
At Belmont Oasis, 16-month-old Roxane Lily is enjoying discounted swimming lessons with her swim instructor Kath Kuschert. It’s hard to wipe the smile from her face when she’s in the water! “Swimming is important for her lungs and it’s good to have a teacher that understands and is aware of her condition,” Roxane’s mum, Kate O’Donovan, says. Lauren Kirwan, Belmont Oasis swim school coordinator, adds: “Belmont Oasis is happy to be in partnership with Royal Life Saving Society WA as an endorsed swim school to provide a quality Swim & Survive Program that allows all children to participate.”
Seven-year-old Demi Bavin is enjoying her lessons at Leisurepark Balga, while 10-year-old Jordan Mears loves swimming at Rockingham Aquatic. Jordan says: “I am very grateful to the Swim & Survive Fund. Swimming is helping my lungs to stay strong.”
According to Cystic Fibrosis WA, one in 25 Australians carry the cystic fibrosis gene and in Australia, one in 2,500 babies are born with CF – one every four days. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening disease, affecting the major organs of the body – specifically the lungs. Swimming is vital to children with CF and Royal Life Saving Society WA is proud to be able to help make a difference!
