Warburton Community Pool wins regional photo competition

Royal Life Saving WA’s Go for 2&5 Swim for Fruit program ran a state-wide photo competition over the summer, inviting children to post a photo or short video sharing why they think it’s important to eat well and stay active.

Supported by Healthway, Swim for Fruit is an after-school lap program which rewards children with fruit snacks and encourages healthy living in regional and remote communities.

Royal Life Saving received a number of entries for the photo competition, though it was the Warburton Community Pool which most impressed judges, taking out the top prize.

Warburton Pool Manager, Steve Girschik, says the children’s winning smiles in their photo entry are a testament to the program’s success.

“The kids in Warburton love the Swim for Fruit program and they love spending time at the pool. It’s a perfect match really; a fun activity followed by a healthy snack that is good fuel. The smiles on their faces really tell the story.”

As winners of the competition, the Warburton Community Pool will receive a Swim Pack consisting of pool toys, accessories and a one hundred dollar sport store voucher.

“Simply put, Healthway’s Go for 2&5 Swim for Fruit program makes a huge difference to the kids here in Warburton. Funding for fruit and pool equipment goes a long way in keeping everyone here happy and healthy,” says Steve.

Swimming and water safety programs such as Swim for Fruit are vital in combating the drowning rate in remote communities, with Aboriginal children almost three times more likely to drown than non-Aboriginal children.

Running active pool sessions with opportunities to share experiences through fun photos helps to cultivate a connected, water safe and health-driven network across WA.
