Watch Around Water message goes regional
The communities in Narrembeen, Bridgetown and Coolgardie hosted community events during the summer school holidays to promote Watch Around Water week. The events included a community pool party, a live music event at the local pool and a mums and bubs picnic. All these events were made possible by Watch Around Water week grants which are available to regional pools to assist them in hosting events that promote the Watch Around Water message.
Watch Around Water is a program jointly promoted by Royal Life Saving WA and LIWA Aquatics to encourage parents to actively supervise their children while attending public swimming pools.
Narrembeen Community Resource Centre received a grant to run the Hollydaze Community Fun Day at Narrembeen Pool. The event was attended by 220 residents and included free entry, a pool inflatable and special guest, Santa. Vanessa Whitstock, manager at Narrembeen CRC and event organizer said the event was a perfect day and community feedback was extremely positive.
Bridgetown Leisure Centre used the grant to host a Pool Party that featured live music, a free sausage sizzle and Santa, who arrived by firetruck. The event was promoted through local schools and community groups. A colouring in competition was also held along with a Watch Around Water fill in the blanks quiz. Emerald Kerr, Aquatics coordinator at Bridgetown Leisure Centre said approximately 150 people attended and it's hoped that the event will make more patrons aware of the importance of the Watch Around Water message.
Coolgardie Pool hosted a number of activities throughout Watch Around Water week including a Mums and Bubs picnic, pool party and school visits that reminded children of water hazards and rescue techniques, along with the promotion of a coloring competitions.
