Western Force players learn to save lives
Recently Royal Life Saving Society WA trainers visited Western Force headquarters to run a first aid training course for players. Western Force is WA’s rugby team, competing in the Super Rugby competition that includes teams from across the southern hemisphere and Japan.
10 players took part in the recent training, completing a one day course covering all aspects of basic first aid and CPR. Western Force Player Development Manager Sam Cox says the skills learnt in the course are very important for their players. “ I opted to run the first aid course as we have a lot of fathers with young children amongst the playing group. I wanted them to be equipped with the right skills in case they were ever in the situation where they needed them at home with their families.”
The players had a lot of fun during their training sessions, bandaging each other up, dealing with fake wounds using a moulage kit, and practicing CPR for both adults and children. Ms Cox says “We have a lot of younger players who are in the professional system for the first time. I think it’s important for them to have better knowledge around not only their own potential injuries but more importantly, to train them with life skills that would make them better members of the community. We do a lot of work with schools and junior clubs, so it’s good to train players in basic first aid so they have the knowledge on how to deal with any situation that may arise under their watch.”
Royal Life Saving Society WA is pleased to be able to assist Western Force in ensuring their players have vital first aid and CPR skills. We congratulate them on their commitment to player safety, and ensuring their players can make a positive difference in our community.
