Wundowie community soaks up extended summer opening of community pool

15 April 2022
The Wundowie community has been soaking up the opportunity to have the community pool open all summer long, with a team from Royal Life Saving WA's Labour Hire service working hard to keep the facility running.

Wundowie, a small regional town located between Perth and Northam in the Darling Range, is home to a population of 1300 people, many of whom have enjoyed the extended opening of their local aquatic facility from November through to April. It’s fair to say that community members were not disappointed to see the gates open at the beginning of November, with the facility recording 2,713 total visitations in December alone.

The Shire of Northam hired the Royal Life Saving WA team to support operations at the Wundowie Pool during its 2021/22 season, wanting to ensure the centre would be open for the community to enjoy. Duty Managers Kaylee Halse, Jake Manning and Cahles Lewis were dispatched to Wundowie to provide services at the facility.

locals enjoying a birthday party at the Wundowie Pool"The community out in Wundowie were very welcoming and passionate about their little town from the beginning," said Kaylee. "They were very grateful to see the gates open at the beginning of November." The season brought a couple of consistent lap swimmers down to the pool; however, families and teenagers made up most of the crowds, coming down after a hot school day or on weekends.

The Wundowie Pool has been an inviting spot for all community members throughout the season, with its six-lane 33m pool and two play pools for infants and young children making it appropriate for all ages. With the swimming pool also housing shaded areas and a barbecue, the aquatic venue has been the happening local spot for parties and functions throughout the season.

Students from Wundowie Primary School, Wooroloo Primary School and Bakers Hill Primary also spent part of Term 4 2021 at the pool receiving their in-term swimming lessons. However, it’s apparent from the high patron rate across the season that the entire community were happy to have the pool open. With the successful season the Wundowie Pool had, we look forward to seeing what the community gets up to next season!
