Yandeyarra trio earn their bronze

11 April 2021

The final weekend of March this year culminated in a great personal achievement for three residents of Yandeyarra, a remote Aboriginal community in WA’s Pilbara region.

Yandeyarra Remote Community School Principal Jessica Albers, along with teacher Kim Mancktelow and student Imrahn Stewart, all completed their Bronze Medallion at the Yandeyarra Community Pool over the weekend of 27-28 March.

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is considered the pinnacle award in lifesaving and has been operating in Australia for over a century. General water safety, survival skills, aquatic rescues and resuscitation are all covered in this lifesaving course. The course enhances personal survival skills as well as providing the skills and knowledge to safely carry out water rescues.

Royal Life Saving WA's Sandra McKenzie, Pool Manager at the Yandeyarra Community Pool, says, “Bronze Medallion gives participants a sense of achievement and confidence. It expands on the ability to swim by showing participants that they can save a life."

Sandy guided the trio through the course and was very impressed with her small weekend class, saying they “are all very good swimmers. We all had a lovely day going through the course together. Great effort by everyone.”

Kim was completing a requalification of her Bronze Medallion, having finished the full course previously. Jessica has previously completed Pool Lifeguard and First Aid training through Royal Life Saving in support of her students who she regularly encourages to do the training.

Jessica has been a strong advocate of the work of Royal Life Saving in remote communities. She has lived and worked in the Yandeyarra community for over a decade and has been instrumental in the relationship with Royal Life Saving WA, earning her the President's Award in 2019!

Well done to Jessica, Kim and Imrahn on their wonderful achievement this year. If you’re interested in undertaking the Bronze Medallion course yourself, learn more and enrol at the link below.
