As National Reconciliation Week begins (27 May – 3 June), Royal Life Saving WA reflects on the progress made through our REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), while looking to the future with the launch of our INNOVATE RAP in the new financial year.

This week is a time for Australians to deepen their understanding of our shared histories and cultures, and to consider the role we each play in creating a reconciled and inclusive future. The 2025 National Reconciliation Week theme, "Bridging Now to Next," speaks directly to where we find ourselves as an organisation in connecting the past, present and future.

Since the release of our first RAP in 2020, Royal Life Saving WA has remained committed to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and creating meaningful opportunities for participation across our water safety programs, workforce, and leadership.

This work has been guided by our First Nations Steering Committee, established in 2017. Their leadership and insight have been critical to ensuring our approach remains respectful of First Nations voices and informed by meaningful consultation.

So far, our Reflect RAP has guided:

  • The appointment of a First Nations Director to the Board.
  • The creation of the Talent Pool program, a youth employment pathway for First Nations youth in the aquatics industry.
  • First Nations participation in water safety education programs and vocational training.
  • Participation in cultural events such as NAIDOC Week, Danjoo Koorliny, alongside cultural awareness training for staff and volunteers.
  • Management and operation of 8 Remote Pools in remote Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara, Kimberley, and Gascoyne regions.

As we move toward the next stage in our Reconciliation Action Plan, we aim to expand opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to participate in aquatics and lifesaving, from early water safety education through to employment and leadership roles. We are also continuing our work to ensure Royal Life Saving WA is a culturally safe and welcoming place to work and engage with.

We recognise that reconciliation is a long-term commitment grounded in listening, reflection, and genuine partnership.

As we prepare to release our Innovate RAP, we do so with gratitude for the partnerships that have shaped our journey so far and we look forward to continuing our journey for a safer, more inclusive future for all Western Australians.
