New board member passionate about cause
Two new appointments have been made to RLSSWA’s board of directors, including Ms Kathleen Lowry MBA.
Ms Lowry is the Principal Policy Advisor within the Office of the Director General at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. She’s responsible for the provision of executive-level policy advice to the Director General on current government priorities, and assists with the change-management process of a newly formed department.
Ms Lowry’s involvement with Royal Life Saving began when she was 17, she gained her Bronze Medallion and Instructors Certificate to become a teacher of swimming and water safety while at University. After travelling to America and completing the equivalent of the Bronze Medallion there, Ms Lowry returned to Australia, where she became involved in teaching outdoor education and as a volunteer surf lifesaver through her interest in swimming and ocean ski paddling.
Working with the Department of Sport and Recreation, Ms Lowry became involved with LIWA Aquatics, and began to look for ways to support and encourage community-based organisations. “I became interested in developing ways to encourage all members of the community active. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about.”
As a mother of two children, Ms Lowry is also passionate about drowning prevention, particularly in remote and regional areas of Australia. “I have recently worked with the Kimberley region, and I’d like to look at ways of creating community hubs to create opportunities for participation, education, awareness and employment. “I look forward to assisting the Board in providing strategic direction, working across State, Local Government and partnering with key corporations and non-for-profits to achieve a common vision for the Royal Life Saving Society."
We look forward to working with Kathleen as we develop our work in regional and remote WA communities.
