New Swim Teacher course makes a splash

11 January 2021

Royal Life Saving WA has launched a new nationally-recognised training course for swimming teachers, as part of the McGowan Government’s ‘Skills Ready’ initiative.

The new course, SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving, made its official debut over the weekend of 9th – 10th January, with the first full course taking place at Cannington Leisureplex. 15 participants who are eager to begin working in the aquatic industry took part in the two-day course, which was a resounding success.

Upcoming courses at Claremont Aquatic Centre and Bayswater Waves have been completely booked out, with further courses scheduled at Armadale Aquatic Centre, Fremantle Leisure Centre, Riverton Leisureplex and Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre. Regional courses have also been announced for Moora and Margaret River.

SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving is an innovative and flexible training solution that offers candidates and industry-recognised Swim Teacher qualification from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package, and is a WA Department of Health approved qualification for swimming and water safety instruction.

The course combines online learning, face-to-face instruction and on-the-job practical hours, and successful participants will gain the qualifications needed to work as a Swimming and Water Safety Instructor in Australia.

SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving includes the SISSS00112 Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skill Set. Units of Competency are:

  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU008 Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
  • SISCAQU009 Instruct water safety and survival skills
  • SISCAQU010 Instruct swimming strokes

It is an approved course in the WA Government Department of Training and Workforce Development Skills Ready program, the aim of which is to provide the ability for students to either prepare for their first job or reskill quickly for jobs that are available as WA’s economy recovers post COVID-19.

Royal Life Saving WA and the Department of Training and Workforce Development are working together to offer this course free to eligible participants. Visit our enrolment page at the link below for information on eligibility requirements.
