Goldfields kids practising rope throws at the Have a Go DayKalgoorlie’s recent ‘Have a Go Day’ gave local kids and community members the perfect chance to dip their toes into the exciting world of pool lifesaving!

40 people from the community joined us at Kalgoorlie Oasis on September 21st for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and brand-new experiences.

Royal Life Saving WA’s ‘Have a Go Day’ program aims to introduce young people from multicultural backgrounds to aquatic sports at their local pool, while also promoting essential water safety skills in a fun and supportive environment.

With noodle races, life jacket challenges, rope throws, and tube rescues, the day was a whirlwind of exciting new events for kids to test their skills and boost their confidence in the water.

Attendees also completed swimming stage assessments to help when enrolling in swimming lessons as classes at the Oasis recommence.

It was the perfect way for everyone to kick back, refuel, and relax after a jam-packed afternoon.

A special thank you to Royal Life Saving WA staff Elle Kilner, Clint Kelleher, Atefeh Mahboob, and Di Crisp, along with the Goldfields Talent Pool crew, for making the day such a success.

“The day went well,” said Di, “the kids had a ball! And the Talent Pool kids were amazing. It was fantastic to see so many showing an interest in the Junior Lifeguard Club for Term 4.”

For many of the attendees, this was their first encounter with pool lifesaving. With summer fast approaching, there’s no better time for kids to learn essential swimming and pool lifesaving skills!

the Goldfields Talent Pool crewWestern Australia is one of the most culturally diverse places in Australia, with nearly one-third of its residents born overseas. Programs like these 'Have a Go' days are crucial in bridging cultural gaps, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to vital water safety skills.

We also extend our gratitude to City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and BHP for their support in making this event possible.

We look forward to seeing even more kids dive into the upcoming multicultural swimming lessons at Kalgoorlie Oasis as summer approaches!
