LJBC Year 9s learn to Respect the River
A group of Year 9 students from Lake Joondalup Baptist College (LJBC) recently headed to Wellington Dam in Collie, to take part in the Royal Life Saving River Ready program.
This was the second year in a row that LJBC students have enjoyed the program, with 165 students taking part this year. Royal Life Saving WA trainers Cathie Calleja and Isabel Franzoni were once again at the helm with the youngsters, working with the students both in the water and along the shore.
Students practised performing rescues on each other with their newly learnt rope-throwing skills and deft manoeuvring of rescue tubes, as well as other team-building exercises that taught safe water practices and survival skills.
LJBC is a strong supporter of water safety education and engages in several aquatic activities with its students. The school regularly incorporates lifesaving events at its swimming carnivals, as the school is situated close to the beach and many of its students are involved in swimming and lifesaving.
River Ready is part of Royal Life Saving’s Respect the River campaign, which provides a range of fun and informative programs to equip people with the knowledge, skills and judgement to keep them safe in our abundant inland waterways.
