New opportunities for Newman youth
Royal Life Saving WA believes our greatest resource is our young people across Western Australia, which is why we have invested in our Talent Pool program. Talent Pool is an innovative training and employment initiative that provides a springboard for Aboriginal young people wanting to achieve employment in the aquatics industry.
Working in partnership with Newman Senior High School, Royal Life Saving WA will soon begin to roll out Talent Pool and other training programs for students in Newman to assist them in gaining a range of work skills. Royal Life Saving Senior Manager Regional Development, Tim Turner, says this agreement has been a long time coming. “I have been working towards this outcome with Newman Senior High School Principal Carolyn Cook for over five years, and the current agreement has only been made possible thanks to financial support from Principal Community Partner BHP.”
Under the agreement Royal Life Saving WA will support a minimum of 150 students per annum for the next two years, enabling them to acquire their First Aid and Bronze Medallion qualifications. In addition, during Term Three 2021 we will work towards qualifying six teachers to become Aquatic trainers capable of training their students up to a Bronze Medallion standard.
In order to further assist these students with their future employment prospects, Royal Life Saving is working in collaboration with pool management at the Shire of East Pilbara to develop pathways for employment focussed on lifeguard and swim teacher positions. Tim says this agreement is a very significant development. “It aligns a current funding opportunity with a collaboration of key people and organisations to develop training and real job opportunities for young people in Newman. Exciting times lay ahead for this township, which will have a work ready aquatic workforce in time for the 2021-22 summer season.”
