LIWA Aquatics celebrates 50 years

31 July 2019

The Leisure Institute of Western Australia Aquatics, or LIWA Aquatics, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! Originally founded as the Swimming Pool Managers Association of WA in 1969, 2019 marks 50 years of bringing together aquatic industry professionals in Western Australia.

LIWA’s Executive Officer, Steve Good, is excited to be at the helm for the organisation’s 50th year. "I feel very proud and privileged to be a part of this milestone event of LIWA Aquatics turning 50," says Steve. "The longevity of the institute is a testament to all the volunteers that have dedicated their time, skills, support and efforts over the years and is what has made the institute what it is today." After first joining the LIWA board in 2003, Steve became Treasurer in 2007 and was elected as Executive Officer in July 2018, a role that’s keeping him very busy but one that he enjoys thoroughly.

Throughout its history, LIWA has provided support, professional development and networking opportunities for those in the aquatic industry with hundreds of members around the state. The institute is committed to supporting the needs and ongoing development of the aquatic industry, and providing an alliance for those in the industry to assist each other.
One of the original committee members, Fred Smith, still attends the annual LIWA Aquatics Conference and Awards Dinner each year, as do many other longstanding members of the institute. These familiar faces will no doubt be enjoying the 50th anniversary celebrations at this year’s event.

The conference and trade exhibition will be held across two days on August 12th and 13th at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. The event provides aquatic industry professionals with a platform to connect and reconnect with each other, develop their network of contacts and to exchange ideas and information about issues that affect their industry.

Around 230 delegates are expected to attend the conference, including aquatic centre managers, pool managers and supervisors, lifeguards, facility managers and other venue staff. Many delegates will even make the effort to travel from regional areas to attend the event.

Conference attendees will hear from a range of speakers from the aquatic and other industries, who will discuss a variety of topics to inspire the industry to try new ideas or adopt better practices for their workplaces and facilities. They’ll also have a chance to explore the numerous trade exhibitor booths between sessions. Another highlight of the event is, of course, the Awards Dinner. This year will see a black and gold theme adorning the main ballroom at the Esplanade, and guests will be entertained by comedian Peter Rowsthorn who will be MC for the evening.

This year’s conference and awards dinner is guaranteed to be an extra special event, and Royal Life Saving WA is looking forward to celebrating this key milestone with LIWA. Be sure to stop by and have a chat with the team at the Royal Life Saving WA booth if you’re attending!
