Enjoying a day of inclusion, swimming, lifesaving and participation
Pilbara Spirit Carnival 2023 one for the history books
The time finally arrived for Royal Life Saving WA to make their way to the Port Hedland for the annual Pilbara Spirit Carnival for the ninth year in a row.
Everyone came out for a fun-filled day of inclusion, swimming, lifesaving and participation.
The carnival which is run in partnership with BHP, Town of Port Hedland and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries had a fantastic turnout of 100 students and 20 teachers from nine schools in surrounding areas.
Senior Manager of Swimming and Water Safety Education at Royal Life Saving WA, Trent Hotchkin, said “these swimming and lifesaving carnivals are a great opportunity for children to come together and gain valuable skills to participate in a range of fun and interactive activities aimed at developing skills to create the next wave of local community lifesavers."
“Our focus is on equipping our young children with skills and knowledge that can potentially save lives, and we believe that through education and practice, we are building a safer community.”
A big thank you to Baler Primary School, Cassia Primary School, Marble Bar Primary School, Port Hedland Primary School, Roebourne District High School, St Cecelia's Catholic Primary School, South Hedland Primary School, Yandeyarra Remote School, and Strelley Community School for coming and attending the carnival.
But who wouldn't want to attend when there were delicious fruit platters and Subway for morning tea and lunch as well as the infamous Subway cookies on offer for the journey home.
They also received goodie bags with a custom Pilbara Spirit Carnival t-shirt designed by Follow the Dream student Camilla Steer, water bottle, rubber duck, interactive workbook complete with word sleuths and quizzes and best of all... a beach ball – which was a huge hit!
Then it was down to business with obstacle races, 10m rope throws, tube rescue relays and 25m and 50m individual swimming races of freestyle and breaststroke.
But the excitement kept coming with kayaks, artistic swimming, water polo and lifejacket games including races, practising entries and the huddle position on offer.
You've got to be in it to win it, which is why each event awarded first, second and third place for its participants.
Be sure to keep an eye out next year for our tenth Pilbara Spirit Carnival, we hear there are already a few surprises in the works!
