Bronze Stars for Yandeyarra children
Jacqui Forbes, Pool Manager at Yandeyarra Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pool, has been busy training up future lifesavers over the past few weeks.
Local children have been learning real life swimming and lifesaving skills so they know how to respond in an emergency, including how to use a spinal board to remove an injured person from the water.
Jacqui says these are very important skills. “As sole operators in the remote pools we’re encouraged to teach people how they can help in an emergency situation. I have a number of senior students who have completed their Bronze Star so I took them through some drills and also showed them where to access the oxygen bottle and defib in case they are needed.”
10 children have completed their Bronze Star in Yandeyarra in the past month and Jacqui says they’re potential future lifeguards in their community.
The pool is also a great tool to encourage children to attend school, with Jacqui enforcing the “No School, No Pool” policy. The children love the pool so don’t want to miss out on all the fun activities on offer.
Our Remote Aboriginal Swimming Pools project is proudly supported by the Housing Authority and BHP Billiton.
