More lifeguards needed in Hedland

14 March 2017

The Royal Life Saving Society WA is currently running a campaign - #bealifeguard - aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to get involved with lifeguarding. Lifeguards are needed at aquatic centres across our state, and especially in regional areas where there is a regular turnover of lifeguard staff moving to the city for university or work.

This weekend Gratwick Aquatic Centre in Port Hedland is running a pool lifeguard course as part of this campaign. The Two Day Pool Lifeguard Course not only teaches skills to save lives, but is also a great way for students to fund their studies, and provides opportunities to start a career in the leisure industry.

Graeme Pollett, Aquatics Supervisor at Port Hedland Leisure says “Pool lifeguarding is a great skill to have for many people. It’s the next step up from the Bronze Medallion and gives you training and knowledge of how to assist in an aquatic emergency. It’s especially good for people seeking employment in the Aquatics Industry, school teachers and sports coaches who take children on camps and excursions. As a job that is fun, flexible and pays well its ideal for school, university students and mums looking for part time work in a team environment and looks great on your resume when applying for future jobs, apprenticeships and traineeships.”

With two busy aquatic centres in the Hedland area Mr Pollett says they are always looking for staff. “We tend to keep most of our lifeguards for 2-3 years but there is a regular turnover due to many of our younger staff moving to the city to attend university. For that reason we really need a good group of trained lifeguards in Hedland to fill those gaps when they arise.”

Pool Lifeguarding is a rewarding job for all those who want to make a difference in their community. Mr Pollett says “At our aquatic centres we look for lifeguards with a positive attitude who are friendly, welcoming and helpful. It’s also important to have a good team attitude, communications skills, a real willingness to learn and a good fitness level. If this sounds like you we’d love for you to join our team and proudly wear the lifeguard uniform!”
