Newest Junior Lifeguard Club making a splash in Albany

26 November 2018

Albany Leisure Centre has become the latest Royal Life Saving WA Endorsed Swim School to implement the Junior Lifeguard Club, with the popular sessions getting underway for the first time this term.

The Junior Lifeguard Club offers a unique aquatic alternative for children who love the water and want to be challenged by taking part in more than just lessons. The program is a fantastic opportunity to further develop swimming skills while also developing new and challenging lifesaving skills.

The sessions in Albany have been extremely successful, with all three one-hour time slots booked out for this term, and more sessions set to be added at the start of Term One 2019.

Albany Swim School Coordinator Kaysha Gardner says the aim is to run the classes in a way that helps the participants achieve their higher stage 10 – 15 Swim and Survive Certificates. “We want the 16 students who’ve taken part to feel they really are a part of a club, while still working towards their RLSSWA certificates in a fun, interactive way. Albany JLC will also be working towards the competitive side of lifesaving, with a future Great Southern Junior Lifeguard Club carnival possible next year.”

Royal Life Saving WA Endorsed Swim Schools Coordinator, Amy Vearing, recently visited Albany Leisure Centre, and was extremely impressed with the children’s response to the Junior Lifeguard Club sessions.

“It is fantastic to see the JLC students so eager to learn new lifesaving skills. They are all working towards different goals, which is one of the reasons the JLC program is so suited to students who want something more than traditional swimming lessons. It was a great experience to see the program run first hand and meet some of the future lifeguards, swimming instructors or even Pool Lifesaving competitors of Albany.”

The Junior Lifeguard Club program is proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
