School is in session for Junior Lifeguard Club State Titles
Preparation is key in the lead up to a big event!
During March and April, Royal Life Saving WA, together with our network of Endorsed Swim Schools, organised development sessions in preparation for the Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) State Titles which will be held at HBF Arena on June 18.
Over 100 participants took part in the sessions at seven swim schools across the Perth metro area. Four key events were practised during the sessions, including the manikin tow, obstacle swim, line throw and rescue tube swim.
"Participants practised different ways to tow manikins while doing different strokes and learnt how to wear and clip a rescue tube. They also swam under noodles or through hoops to prepare for their swimming with obstacles event, which could be up to one metre deep," said Endorsed Swim Schools Officer, Emily Gibb.
"They also became pros at coiling ropes and throwing them the correct distance so they can be rope throw relay champions at the State Titles. A big thank you to swim teachers Naomi, Joanne and Olivia for teaching these important development sessions."
Skills learnt were put to the test by the Swan Active Beechboro and Ballajura branches when they went head to head in competition recently.
Swan Active Beechboro's acting Swim School Coordinator, Jean-Anne, said the development sessions were “a great help in learning the ‘correct’ way to teach competitive skills to both our instructors and students."
A total of 27 participants competed in the carnival, but in the end, it was Ballajura who were crowned the champions. However, no one went home empty handed with everyone receiving a Royal Life Saving goody bag – which we were told were a hit!
