Swan Active Junior Lifeguards boost their skills
Swan Active Beechboro’s Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) participants recently took part in development sessions held at their centre. The sessions were run by qualified coaches Sebastian Bernhard and Callan Smith and focused on the modified pool lifesaving events used in Royal Life Saving's JLC carnivals. These events include the mannikin tow, rope throw relay and rescue tube tow.
About 40 children attended the training sessions, which aimed to teach not only the students but also Swan Active's local coaches, providing some insight into different drills that are effective for developing skills needed to successfully compete in the modified events.
Lachlan Manson is one of the JLC coaches at Swan Active Beechboro and says the sessions were really valuable. "I thought that all the development sessions ran really well. It was especially great to see our Wednesday group, which sometimes struggles with motivation, connecting really well with Seb. He was able to give the kids an enjoyable session while also teaching them and myself lots of new skills including warm-ups, and many manikin tow styles I'd never seen before.”
“I feel that over the 4 sessions, there was a variety of different skills and techniques shown that enabled the instructors to learn a lot, while also giving the students an enjoyable time of learning.”
