Teenagers caught in rip owe lives to brave bystander

Three young people are alive today because of the heroic actions of Mark Clark.

In August 2020, Mark noticed three teenagers who had become caught in a dangerous rip current. The tide was high and there was a rocky outcrop at the tide line. Despite the challenging conditions, Mark quickly took action by acquiring a nearby board and paddled out into the treacherous waters.

“Something had to be done fast, as once someone goes under it happens all too quickly,” said Mark. “They were panicking, exhausted and struggling to keep swimming.”

Reaching the teens, Mark worked to keep them calm while transporting them back to shore. Mark brought two of them back to safety, while the third was assisted by a police officer who had been alerted to the emergency.

Mark was awarded a Gold Medallion Bravery Award for his actions that day, which he says was very unexpected.

“For me it was about helping those that needed it and putting them first to ensure they were ok. I am just thankful that I was there and able to help on the day and no lives were lost.”

December 1 is National Water Safety Day, and Royal Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia are urging everyone to make water safety a priority over summer. Last year, 41% of all drowning deaths occurred during the summer months, with people flocking to waterways during the warmer weather.

Mark credits growing up near the beach for teaching him a lot about the conditions, giving him the confidence to help without putting himself in harm’s way.

“When it comes to beaches and water safety, just take a moment. If you’re not sure, watch the conditions. It all happens too quick when you least expect it. I have read and watched too many news articles where people have drowned trying to save others.

“If you’re in a situation to rescue someone, make sure you have the confidence in the conditions you are challenged with. Time is of the essence but take a quick pause and moment to make sure you are capable of what you will be facing, as you don’t want to end up in the same situation or worse.”
