Kwinana students up-skill for future employment

Students from SMYL Community College, a school for disengaged youth, have embraced hands-on learning while gaining useful qualifications as part of Royal Life Saving WA’s Talent Pool program. 

The three-week course offered students the opportunity to achieve a CPR qualification and learn essential water safety skills at Kwinana Recquatic. Lead by Royal Life Saving Program Coordinator Pida Bule-Turner, the program incorporated Bronze Rescue activities to build students’ survival skills to help them during aquatic emergencies.

Supported by Principal Community Partner BHP, the Talent Pool program generates real employment opportunities for young people by providing access to innovative training. By engaging youth in the local community, the program aims to equip and empower them for professional roles in the aquatic industry. 

Many of the students felt nervous prior to beginning the sessions, but their confidence greatly improved over the three classes. Some of the candidates are now discussing the future role of becoming a lifeguard. The sessions also provided an opportunity for students to reconnect with their local pool, as many hadn’t visited an aquatic centre in years.
