Talent Pool team carves it up at skatepark opening
Royal Life Saving WA’s Talent Pool squad was on hand to supervise the official opening of Port Hedland’s world-class skatepark.
Hundreds of people packed the skatepark to celebrate the new $7 million facility, which features an impressive shade structure, LED lights, art installation and audio-visual capability.
Some of Australia’s top professional BMX riders and skateboarders wowed the crowd with their skills and passed on some tips to local enthusiasts while the Talent Pool team ensured the crowd stayed safe.
Supported by Principal Community Partner BHP, the Talent Pool program in the Pilbara has helped pave the way for employment opportunities for youth in the community.
In the past three months the Talent Pool squad, made up of 15 to 18-year-olds, has supported a series of high-profile corporate events like the Town of Port Hedland’s skatepark opening, the Gratwick Pool opening and the Royal Life Saving Spirit Carnival.
Equipped with lifesaving and first aid skills, these young people are able to support both wet and dry recreational activities while engaging with the community.
Royal Life Saving Senior Manager for Regional Development, Tim Turner, said the Talent Pool squad is made up of emerging young leaders who are contributing their skills not only at the pool but also through a larger role in the broader community.
“They have become an important feature in the town, providing a source of inspiration for young people wanting to make a difference,” he said.
