Tips for managing your swimming pool

Swimming pools can be a high maintenance asset and if not managed properly can end up costing significant money! So to ensure your swimming pool is an asset rather than a headache, here are some tips to help you successfully manage your pool.

A clean pool

It should go without saying, but having a clean and tidy pool leads to more guests using the facility. Leaves and other debris that remain in the pool can lead to contamination of the water, which may cause patrons to fall ill, and can also cause blockages and poor water circulation.

There is also the visual aspect – no one wants to swim in a pool full of algae!

A poor perception of your pool facility may have a long term detrimental affect on your business.

Balanced water and regular water testing

Water balancing at your aquatic facility is important, as balanced water will prolong the life of your pool and its fittings. It will also assist in preventing staining and improve visitor comfort.

Unbalanced water can cause etching or eroding of surfaces and fittings, or the formation of scale. It can also affect water disinfection by causing fluctuations in chemicals.

The Code of Practice for Aquatic Facilities states that water in aquatic facilities must be tested according to the following schedule:

  • Group 1 Facilities: at least once every four hours
  • Group 2 Facilities: at least three times per day
  • Group 3 Facilities: at least twice per day
  • Group 4 Facilities: at least once per day

Safe pool disinfection

Chemicals used for pool disinfection can be harmful if not stored or used in the correct manner. Disinfectants kill micro-organisms in pool water, but can be harmful to patrons and operators if not used correctly. They may also cause reactions if not mixed correctly.

It is essential that the right type and amount of chemicals are stored safely onsite for continual water treatment. Chemical water standards must be met to maintain good water quality in your pool.

Regular pool equipment maintenance and testing

A visual inspection of all plant room equipment is essential to detect any faulty equipment, leaks from any valves, pipework or dosing systems. It is also essential that regular cleaning of lint/hair strainers is conducted to ensure effective water circulation and filtration.
