Multicultural Participation

Western Australia is a state of migrants and is home to people from more than 190 countries, speaking more than 270 languages and dialects While migration offers a range of increased opportunities for economic growth, social and cultural innovation, having such a culturally and linguistically diverse population presents unique challenges including an increased risk of experiencing fatal and non-fatal drowning. Sadly, 40% of drowning deaths recorded in our state involve people who were born overseas. Of these, two thirds were from non-English speaking backgrounds.

40% of WA drowning deaths are people who were born overseasWe know that for multicultural communities, traditional methods of delivering water safety programs are neither effective nor appropriate due to the variety of cultural values, religious beliefs and family commitments.

A one-size-fits-all approach will not meet everyone’s needs. In an effort to ensure policies, programs and services are accessible for everyone, and to achieve equitable outcomes for all, we work diligently to understand the characteristics, circumstances and needs of the groups and individuals in our communities and provide appropriate and responsive services.

Royal Life Saving WA is committed to removing barriers to participation.

In consultation and partnership with stakeholders, Royal Life Saving WA is committed to removing barriers to participation for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds by delivering tailored, evidence-based programs including children and youth swimming lessons; and men only and women only swimming lessons at key aquatic centres in the Perth metro are and regional WA. Additionally, we deliver Water Safety Talks and Heart Beat Club (first aid skills) to multicultural community to learn how to enjoy our waterways safely and how to respond in an emergency.
