Royal Life Saving WA is pleased to partner with the Indian Society of Western Australia (ISWA) to support water safety awareness among the WA Indian community.

Water safety awareness and the ability to swim are central to the Western Australian lifestyle. However, multicultural communities are over-represented in drowning statistics.

Many new arrivals to Western Australia have poor or non-existent swimming and water safety skills. Research has found that within multicultural groups, awareness of the importance of swimming and lifesaving skills is significantly less than the rest of the population.

Alarmingly, over the past 10 years there have been 139 drowning deaths in WA involving people born overseas. There have been eight drowning deaths involving people from an Indian background over the past 15 years.

Royal Life Saving WA is working to address the factors influencing a lack of participation in swimming and water safety education among multicultural communities.

Our multicultural swimming lesson programs for men, women, and children offer culturally sensitive classes for participants of any stage to learn vital swimming and water safety skills in a safe space alongside peers from their community.
