Confident Kiyana-Lee from Coolgardie first joined the Talent Pool program on January 18, 2023, after she was recognised as an outstanding prospect for a potential Coolgardie lifeguard.

“I liked the idea of doing something different and she helped me set it up and do it, which I did in December last year.”

Once Kiyana had completed her Pool Lifeguard and First Aid course she joined Talent Pool, seeing it as a great opportunity to work closely with other Aboriginal children, teaching them how to swim, doing activities and having lots of fun.

"I don't feel overwhelmed by my responsibilities with the kids, everyone really enjoys their time with each other. It's very different to just lifeguarding – doing what I do through Talent Pool allows me to bond with the kids one on one."

She is completing a VET course in automotive and vehicle mechanics. She loves the flexibility of Talent Pool as it means she can work her shifts around school hours.

A fond memory of Talent Pool that has stuck with Kiyana was a trip to Burra Rock with East Kalgoorlie Primary School students.

"We set up rope throw rescues in the lake and took them out deeper with a mat to test their abilities in water under supervision; they loved it," she said.

Ultimately, Kiyana hopes to continue to work in the sport and recreation industry.

“I really enjoy what I do through Talent Pool. I’ve been presented with an opportunity to do pool management within the next two years. This is something I’m looking towards and would like to take on full time.”
