Step 2: Complete online learning

The online theory will take approximately 10 hours to complete and will prepare you for the face to face component.

Step 3: Attend course

The face to face learning involves classroom training, including practical training on pool deck practising water rescues and teaching swimming lessons. This will cover basic water rescues, instruction of water familiarisation, buoyancy, mobility skills, water safety and survival skills, and swimming strokes. Full course details are available here.

You can find lesson plans by clicking here.

Step 4: Complete practical hours

As part of the application for a Swim Teacher licence, candidates must complete the below on-the-job activities:

  • Workplace Induction Checklist (to be completed on first day of employment)
  • Organisational Work Health and Safety (completed as soon as reasonably possible after employment)
  • Supervised Teaching Practice (at least four controlled Learn to Swim sessions under direct supervision of an Approved Workplace Supervisor)
  • Workplace Supervision Verification (upon completion of the above components)

More information on these components can be found in the Workplace Induction Workbook and Checklist, which is available through the link below.
