Annual Events

Royal Life Saving Society WA conducts and participates in many community events across WA each year, some of these are listed below.

Royal Life Saving Bravery Awards

The Royal Life Saving Society WA Bravery Awards are designed to recognise and acknowledge the efforts and actions of people within the community who have performed a rescue and/or resuscitation, and by applying this knowledge have saved another’s life. The recognition of these individuals sends a strong message to the West Australian public about the importance of gaining an education in life saving.

Pool Lifeguard Challenge

The Pool Lifeguard Challenge is a competition run annually by the Royal Life Saving Society WA, with the aim of testing teams of professional lifeguards. Teams of four lifeguards are entered by aquatic centres throughout Western Australia to participate. Each lifeguard team must respond to scenarios given to them and deal with the situation at hand. Teams are assessed based on their response to incidents involving aquatic rescue, resuscitation and public relations.

The Great Australia Day Duck Pluck Raffle is a a community raffle, whereby purchasing one or more $2 tickets, supporters have the chance to win a new car or $15,000 cash, while supporting our water safety programs throughout WA. Leavers - Meelup Beach Day

Royal Life Saving recognises that youth and alcohol and water is not a great mix. So, each year we send a bunch of Don’t Drink and Drown volunteers to hotspots across the state like Rottnest and Dunsborough, where over 10,000 students will congregate over the course of Leavers week to socialise and relax after a busy exam period.

During the day we run diversionary activities like the Don’t Drink and Drown Meelup Beach Day. This is a marque event that is frequented by over 5000 leavers each year.

Australian Pool Life Saving Championships

The Australian Pool Life Saving Championships have been conducted in various forms since 1965. Originally held every two years, since 1987 they are now held annually and consist of 3 days of Pool Lifesaving competition with events combining an Under 14 and Senior (Under 16, Under 19, Open and Masters) Competition.

Representative teams are chosen yearly at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships. These teams, called the 'Aussie Barras', are named after the Barramundi fish - an aggressive fresh and saltwater fish found in Australian waters.

Watch Around Water Week

In early summer each year Watch Around Water Day is held to encourage public swimming pools to organise an event or promotion on this day, educating the community on the importance of parental supervision when visiting their local pool.

Resource packs are available to pools interested in running an event or promotion to help promote the Watch Around Water safe supervision messages on the day.
