Tips for winter boating

If you haven’t discovered winter boating yet, this season is the perfect opportunity to head out there and see what it’s all about. For those in the know, winter offers a unique set of conditions for boaters.

Despite the immediate thoughts of cold, stormy days, wintertime – particularly in Perth – can provide some of the best days for boating. While summer is plagued by strong winds in the morning and afternoons, you’re more likely to get a run of clear, flat, glassy days during winter. We’re known for our beautiful sunny winter days in Perth, and it’s even better out on the water.

There’s also less boats in winter. You’ll avoid the jostling crowds of the busy summer season and get to enjoy the most picturesque spots while it’s quiet and relaxed. You might even spot a whale if you’re lucky! For the keen anglers, fish are in abundance during winter as some species move in closer to shore. Surf conditions are also at some of their best in winter, especially around Rottnest Island.

While there are many benefits to boating during winter, follow these simple tips to ensure you have the best experience:

Check the weather before you go

Although winter does offer some perfect days, it can also be very fickle. Conditions can change drastically from one day to the next, so be sure to keep an eye on any cold fronts headed our way or how the swell is looking – it can be deceptive on a windless day!

Dress appropriately

Even on a sunny day it can get bitterly cold on the water. Keep yourself warm and comfortable by adding some thermal layers, beanie and gloves. Make sure anyone coming with you does the same!

Do a safety check

If you run into any problems in winter, the cold water can add some extra dangers such as hypothermia. Ensure you check that you have all the appropriate safety gear and that it’s in good working order before you head out.

Log on and off

With less boats around to come to your assistance, it’s even more important to radio in and log onto a marine rescue service. Make sure you remember to log off when you return to avoid a search being initiated!
