Summer Pool Maintenance

During the summer holidays backyard swimming pools tend to get a workout, so how can you make sure your pool is ready for the onslaught?

Follow these simple steps to keep your pool crystal clear this summer.

Remove your pool cover

Drain off any water, but not back into the pool. Sweep the cover to ensure it’s clean. Store it under cover for protection from the elements to help it last longer.

Check the water level.

Top up any lost water, ensuring the level is at the middle of the skimmer opening to allow for proper circulation.

Test your swimming pool water

Take a sample of pool water for analysis - this will tell you exactly what the pH and chlorine levels are and determine what you need to do to correct all levels. When chlorine levels drop below 1 ppm, it can cause algae to grow in the pool.

Balance the pH level in the pool

Balance the pH by adding either an acid or a base to bring the level to just around 7.4 - 7.6.

Check the pump, filter and skimmer basket.

Ensure everything is clean and in good working order. Empty out and clean all skimmer baskets. Then start the circulation system and remove any debris from the water.

If you follow these simple steps, and check your chemical levels on a regular basis - especially when your pool has been heavily used - your pool will stay crystal clear and ready for swimming all summer!
