Units of Competency within training packages are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure the currency, best practice and relevance of approved industry training. In October 2020, new versions of eight first aid units of competency were announced that supersede existing units.
Five of these are units offered by Royal Life Saving WA across several of our training courses, below is a summary of the changes.

Overall, the outcomes, skills and knowledge are the same in the following units, with some minor additions and changes and some rewording of content:
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid
- HLTAID012 - Provide first aid in an education and care setting
Life threatening bleeding, tourniquets and haemostatic dressings have been added to:
- HLTAID011 - Provide first aid (knowledge component only)
- HLTAID014 - Provide advanced first aid (skills and knowledge)
- HLTAID015 - Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy (skills and knowledge)
A 12-month transition period is currently in effect for the superseded units and the Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that offer them.
Royal Life Saving WA (RTO 0854) is working to have the new units available by Monday 10th May 2021.
