Keep Watch aims to prevent drowning deaths of children under five years of age in all aquatic locations.

For 25 years, Keep Watch has been advising Australian parents and carers about how to keep their children safe when in and around water.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of preventable death in children 0-4 years of age in Australia. On average, four children in this age group drown every year in WA and many more are admitted to hospital as the result of a non-fatal drowning. Almost all toddler drownings are due to a lack of active adult supervision.

The Keep Watch program has four key drowning prevention actions:

  • Supervise - Always keep watch of your child around water
  • Restrict - Restrict your child's access to water at all times
  • Teach - Teach your child water safety skills
  • Respond - Learn CPR and call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency

Together, these safety measures can help to keep children safe around water.

Keep Watch is supported by the Department of Health Western Australia.
