Community Trainers celebrated at annual seminar

community trainers listening to a presentation at the 2023 Trainer SeminarCommunity Trainers from across the state gathered both in person and virtually at the Bendat Basketball Centre in Floreat for Royal Life Saving WA’s sixth annual Trainer Seminar on the 30th of January.

The event provided an opportunity for the sixty trainers to network and build skills through professional development sessions and seminars from presenters across a diverse range of industries.

Trainers participating in a group activity at the 2023 Trainer SeminarThe morning began with Philippa Henderson, founder of the Sharing Shed, a social enterprise empowering communities through access to mental health services. Philippa shared her experiences working with at-risk youth and observing systemic mental health challenges.

Barbara Loudon, a recently retired Senior Registered Nurse of over fifty years, then presented on education programs, demonstrating the importance of infant resuscitation for parents.

The seminar also included a briefing on delivering engaging sessions by Julie Fraser, a Learning and Developing Specialist at the Australian Institute of Management WA who has twenty years of experience in the industry. 

Live streaming of the 2023 Trainer SeminarRoyal Life Saving’s Compliance Coordinator, Jacqui Byala and Lead Trainer, Leanne Coverley-Brandis closed the professional development session with a discussion on training packages and compliance updates.

The seminar was also an opportunity for Royal Life Saving to recognise and honour valuable staff, members and volunteers whose contributions within communities make an important difference. 

The first WA Service Order was awarded to Kevin Emery, a trainer who delivers a range of courses from Advanced First Aid to Aquatic Rescue while also assisting with performance reviews for First Aid trainers. 

Maja Pitts, another employee with community trainer roots, was awarded the WA Service Order in recognition of her journey to become qualified to teach Bronze Medallion courses and is now on track to deliver CPR courses.

For ten years of service and dedication, Brad Stewart received the WA Long Service Order. Specialising in delivering First Aid and CPR courses to school students and staff members, Brad has also established a reputable camp program encouraging outdoor engagement and safety.

Nicole Durrant was also awarded with a WA Long Service Order in recognition of the positive feedback she’s received from her water-based courses and extra volunteer efforts. 

The final awards for Outstanding Service were presented to Moira Cohen, Deb Gillard, Ray Holt, Deb Langlois, Caryn McWhirter and Dianne Mcdermott. These six trainers have been a part of Royal Life Saving for over twenty years, contributing to communities across the state.

The seminar received great feedback from both trainers and presenters as everyone shared topics and experiences of interest that developed their learning throughout the day.
