Leisurefit lifeguards awarded for saving a life
In January this year, lifeguards at Leisurefit Booragoon saved the life of a woman who had collapsed in the change rooms at the facility. The team were recently recognised with Royal Life Saving Bravery Awards for their efforts.
The incident unfolded on January 7th, when local Councillor Clive Robartson alerted staff to the fact that his wife, Cherryl, had fallen unconscious in the change rooms after experiencing a cardiac arrest. Lifeguard Dylan Power was first on the scene, and immediately radioed for help. He was then joined by colleagues Alexandra Gamble and Liam Taylor.
The trio assessed Cherryl and determined that she was showing no signs of life, so they commenced CPR with Dylan and Alexandra providing the compressions while Liam performed breaths. Meanwhile, colleagues Harley Osborne and Shay-Lee Smith provided support by calling 000, relaying information to staff and emergency services and evacuating the pools.
After 4 shocks from the defibrillator and continuous CPR, the team were able to successfully revive Cherryl, who was then taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment. The staff dealt with the incident in a calm and professional manner and their effective teamwork and quick-thinking ensured Cherryl received the help she needed.
Cr Robartson said he and his wife are both grateful for the response from the staff at LeisureFit Booragoon. “The quick actions of the lifeguards helped save Cherryl’s life and we are so appreciative,” said Cr Robartson. “We are both so pleased that the staff have been recognised with Bravery Awards.”
City of Melville Mayor the Hon. George Gear JP said he was also pleased the LeisureFit Booragoon lifeguards had been honoured. “The lifeguards’ professional behaviour and fast response in helping to save the life of Mrs Robartson are more than worthy of being recognised,” said Mayor Gear.
Alexandra Gamble, Dylan Power and Liam Taylor received the Gold Star Bravery Award for their outstanding response, whilst Harley Osborne and Shay-Lee Smith received a Bravery Commendation.
