Members of the Barking Gumnuts Caravan Club at their monthly rally
Mandurah caravan club Makes The Right Call this summer
The Barking Gumnuts Caravan Club recently invited Royal Life Saving WA to be a part of its monthly rally which focused on staying safe during the festive season.
Royal Life Saving Community Trainer Cathie Calleja attended the Mandurah Caravan and Tourist Park last month to discuss the ‘
Make The Right Call’ initiative to 20 club members as part of the gathering.
Thanks to funding provided by the WA Department of Health, the caravan clubbers were able to receive this valuable presentation for free and learn the importance of safe decision-making when travelling with their caravans and enjoying the outdoors.
The Make The Right Call initiative covers four fundamental topics as a basis to understanding risks to safety including environment and weather conditions, personal limits, necessary gear for various activities and how to respond when there is an emergency.
In Western Australia, half of all drowning deaths recorded are adults aged 45 years and over, with those aged between 65-74 the most at risk.
The caravan club recognised the increasing vulnerabilities that come with ageing and the importance of first aid.
Many of the members hike regularly along the coast and Cathie tailored her presentation to include valuable tips for the avid explorers.
“Many of the club members were keen bushwalkers so we discussed staying safe in, on, or around inland waterways,” she said.
Upon wrapping up the session, the Barking Gumnuts Caravan Club is now looking to take part in the
Heart Beat 45+ community education course which is specifically designed for adults who would like to learn how to respond to emergencies in more depth.
