The happenings of Halls Creek
Halls Creek has been busy with all things swimming lessons recently and the Swim and Survive lessons delivered in partnership with Lotterywest were no exception.
The lessons were made possible through the generosity of Lotterywest investing in the COOL POOL Project which aims to build on the local swimming pool being seen as an inherent community asset to drive positive change.
Over the course of three weeks, local kids aged between six and eight-years-old participated in the Swim and Survive curriculum, more specifically Stage 2 to Stage 4.
The lessons were an overnight success, gaining popularity in the community as the days went on – the after-school activity was a welcome treat in the heat which continues to hit the remote and regional areas, as well as the icy poles and fruit which were given to kids who participated.
The lessons were full of fun and inclusion, harnessing the need for creating a sense of community among the kids focusing on the idea that 'no one misses out’.
And the kids weren't the only ones who benefited from the lessons. There was an adult male participant who also made the most of Royal Life Saving WA's visit to town, who undertook private one-on-one lessons.
The participant moved to Western Australia from Pakistan, having never learnt to swim before...now was his chance and he passed Stage 5 which is an amazing result!
Touching the hearts of his instructors, he was given a kickboard and noodle to take home as a gift for all of his hard work.
Amanda, Royal Life Saving WA Swimming Instructor said, ''I couldn't be prouder of everyone who got involved in the lessons. It's so nice to see everyone be so enthusiastic and engaged in wanting to learn new skills – it makes it that much easier to come to work every day.''
