Lessons in water safety at Jigalong School

20 November 2020

Royal Life Saving WA’s Deb Gill, who is the Jigalong Swimming Pool Program Coordinator, recently facilitated a series of Water Safety Talks for children at the Jigalong Remote Community School.

Jigalong school childrenJigalong is a remote Aboriginal community in WA’s Pilbara region, famous for its rabbit-proof fence! Deb has been the Program Coordinator at the community’s swimming pool for several years and enjoys teaching the local kids swimming and water safety skills.

The Water Safety Talks delivered by Deb are part of Royal Life Saving WA’s water safety education program for schools. The program is being supported in Jigalong by the Shire of East Pilbara and Principal Community Partner BHP, and is designed to assist kids to stay safe in and around the water.

27 children participated in the interactive classroom workshops, which covered water safety knowledge and safe rescue techniques as well as the risks in different aquatic environments.

The talks will have set a great foundation in water safety for the kids, and it was great timing, too, as they are about to commence a two-week block of swimming lessons with Deb!
